IRAs

Traditional IRA

  • Earnings are tax deferred until withdrawn.
  • Regular contributions may be tax deductible.
  • Contributions are subject to IRS limits.
  • Most traditional IRA distributions are subject to income taxes.
  • Distributions may be taken at any time and will be treated as regular income. (Non-qualified distributions may be subject to the 10% early withdrawal penalty).
  • Can be used to rollover your eligible employer-sponsored retirement plan.

Roth IRA

  • Earnings may be tax-free if the IRA is opened for five tax years and withdrawn for a qualified reason: Age 59 ½ , Disability, Death or first-time home purchase.
  • Contributions are subject to IRS limits.
  • No age limit for regular contributions.
  • Distributions may be taken at any time and are tax and penalty free for a qualified withdrawal. (non-qualified distributions may be subject to the 10% early withdrawal penalty).
  • Not required to take minimum distributions.
  • Can be used to rollover your 401(k) from a previous employer.

Coverdell IRA Education Savings

  • May be opened by a parent or guardian in the name of any child up to the age of 18.
  • Annual contributions of up to $2,000 per child, not deductible.
  • Withdrawal for qualified education expenses may be tax and penalty free.

CONTRIBUTION TYPES

REGULAR

A deposit into an IRA made by an owner meeting compensation, age and income qualifications for contributions.

TRANSFER

Money is being moved from one IRA to another IRA (same type) without the owner every having access to the funds.

ROLLOVER

Money from an IRA was paid to the owner and is now being moved to the same type IRA within 60 days of receipt. A rollover can be done once every 365 days.

DIRECT ROLLOVER

Money is being moved from an eligible employer-sponsored retirement plan to this IRA without the owned ever having access to the funds. It is best practice to consult with your employee plan administer and/or tax adviser before pursing this type of retirement account.
